Course Description

The Basic Plumbing Skills Course is an entry-level programme designed for individuals with no prior plumbing experience who want to build a solid foundation in the plumbing trade. The course covers essential plumbing theory, tools, materials, and basic installation and maintenance of common domestic plumbing systems.

Learners will be introduced to plumbing principles, safety practices, pipe fitting, and basic installations related to geysers, toilets, showers, taps, and drainage systems. Practical training is a core part of the programme, allowing learners to work on real plumbing setups, not just theory.

This course prepares learners for entry into the plumbing industry and forms the foundation toward becoming a qualified plumber at NQF Level 2, once sufficient workplace practical experience has been obtained.


Course Content / Outline

  • Introduction to plumbing principles and the plumbing industry

  • Health, safety, and basic plumbing legislation

  • Plumbing tools, equipment, and materials

  • Pipe types, fittings, and joining methods

  • Domestic cold and hot water supply systems

  • Basic installation and maintenance of geysers

  • Installation and maintenance of toilets, basins, and showers

  • Drainage systems and basic waste removal principles

  • Reading and interpreting basic plumbing diagrams

  • Pipe measurement, layout, and simple calculations

  • Fault finding and common household plumbing problems

  • Good housekeeping and professional work practices


Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand basic plumbing principles and terminology

  • Identify and correctly use common plumbing tools and materials

  • Install and maintain basic domestic plumbing components

Progression toward NQF Level 2 plumber status requires additional practical workplace experience in line with industry requirements.
