Course Description

The Temporary Works Supervisor Training Course (TWSTC) is designed for individuals who are required to supervise temporary works on site, in accordance with BS 5975. The course complements the Temporary Works Co-ordinator Training Course (TWCTC) and focuses on the supervisory responsibilities associated with temporary works.

The training provides learners with a clear understanding of the Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) role, including supervision, checking, communication, coordination, and risk management. The course aims to raise industry standards and promote a consistent, transferable level of competence across employers.


Role of the Temporary Works Supervisor

The Temporary Works Supervisor role is defined within BS 5975 and includes responsibilities related to:

  • Supervision and checking of temporary works activities

  • Issuing load and unload permits where required and where competent

  • Assisting the Temporary Works Co-ordinator (TWC) with delegated duties

  • Ensuring compliance with company procedures and site requirements

  • Overview of temporary works and the role of the Temporary Works Supervisor

  • Legal and industry requirements related to temporary works

  • Roles and responsibilities of the TWS and others involved in temporary works

  • Detailed understanding of BS 5975 in relation to supervision

  • The importance of the 4Cs: communication, coordination, cooperation, and competency

  • Risk management principles for temporary works

  • Supervising, checking, and monitoring temporary works on site

  • Permit systems and control measures related to temporary works

  • Practical application of temporary works supervision principles


Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the duties and responsibilities of a Temporary Works Supervisor

  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of others involved in temporary works

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of BS 5975 requirements

  • Apply effective risk management principles to temporary works

  • Implement the 4Cs effectively within the workplace

  • Support the Temporary Works Co-ordinator in maintaining safe systems of work

  • Site personnel responsible for supervising temporary works

  • Supervisors and foremen involved in construction activities

  • Individuals appointed or about to be appointed as Temporary Works Supervisors

Entry Requirements

  • There are no formal entry requirements

  • Delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a Temporary Works Supervisor


Assessment

  • Continuous participation during the course

  • Final assessment by multiple-choice examination


Examination Details

  • Compulsory examination set by CITB

  • 25 multiple-choice questions

  • Duration: 30 minutes

  • Open-book examination

  • Pass mark: 72%


Certification

Delegates who successfully achieve the required level of understanding will be awarded the Temporary Works Supervisor Training Course (TWSTC) Certificate, which is valid for 5 years.
